Antiqua Watch – Steampunk Timepiece

Antiqua Watch by Vianney Halter

Some time ago, there was shock and awe at the beauty that was the Cabestan watch – a beautiful but excruciatingly expensive watch by Vianney Halter and DMC. Well, more fool me for linking to the Vianney Halter page then and not having noticed the above beautiful watch at the time. I must have been blind.

The Antiqua is part of the Futur Anterior range, which they describe as -

“These are watches than one might imagine on Captain Nemo’s wrist when at the controls of his Nautilus, or pehaps worn by H.G. Well’s when returning from time travel.??

And I really can’t disagree with that at all. I must thank many people for being far sharper of eye than myself – Mr Stephen P, Mr And0, Mr J E Park, Mr Iain, and BoingBoing. Please – if anyone finds out how much it actually costs, please don’t tell me. As the saying goes, if you have to ask…

A Series of Unfortunate Events film

While regular readers must surely despair of my film sensibilities (or lack thereof) and most sensible people surely have a dislike for the film of the recently ended series of books – I actually quite liked the “A Series of Unfortunate Events” film. Admittedly, I’ve not read the books yet (though I may have to do so in the future) so there was nothing to compare it to, but I did love the artistic style, and the fact that it featured a genius inventor girl. Mr Matt Moores, though he despaired a little of the film, actually rather liked the end credits animation, which you can see on the iFilms site. Personally, I find it just reeks of gothic oldness, possibly not quite Steampunk but with heavy Victorian overtones – so I’m quite happy to disconnect brain and bathe in the visuals.

The Mondo Spider

I… I must have one!

While the photograph above doesn’t look like all that much to write home about, I simply insist that you pop over to the Mondo Spider Project page and take a look at the .avi video of the spider in question – a giant mechanical RIDABLE form of spider-themed transport!

While the page is a little short on descriptive overviews, it seems to be created by Industrialus Design (of Mr J Tippett) who are engineering consultants and fabricators of what seems to be a very high caliber. Created for Burning Man events, I can only hope that work continues apace on this mechanical spider vehicle (I am reminded of Wild Wild West) and Steampunk fans such as myself can one day look forward to retiring with a two-seater spider in the garage. Many many thanks, Mr ClymAngus!

Romantica Espresso Machine

16 cup espresso machine

Ah, why do coffee drinkers get the most Steampunk looking beverage making machines? The above (pointed out by Mr Joe Roberts) is La Pavoni 16 cup Romantica espresso machine in brass and wood. Such a shine on it, and with that valve (including danger level – they really have to have danger levels on them) and that oversized handle, it really does look overengineered for the task – marvelous! Shame about the little green switch on the side, but I suppose there must be consessions to modernity here and there, though for that price, I would have hoped for something better than green plastic, perhaps?

Around the World with Willy Fogg

Posted by on December 12th,2006

3XFbLVcFXUosniff True to my word, I looked up Around the World with Willy Fogg on the wonderously nebulous internet, and I was quite overcome with memories. Above is the introductory song from the English version, bad dubbing and all, and it actually made my eyes well up quite unexpectedly. Ever so sorry.

But enough of that – the cartoon original series was from Spain, based on the Jules Verne story Around the World in 80 Days and was so amazingly popular across the world that two subsequent adventures tasked our four heroes, also based on Verne’s work – one based on Journey to the Centre of the Earth, and one on 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea. Those of a particular age I’m sure will have fond memories indeed of the adventures of Mr Fogg (also known as Fog, in some areas) and it may well have been my first encounter with the works of Verne in any form. Apparently, a kind soul is getting the DVDs for me as a gift, as Amazon.co.uk (Willy Fog – Complete Collection) seems to stock them.

‘Wooden’ Plane Paint Effect

Wooden Plane Paintwork

Mr Beaty informed me of (and I’d previously seen on BoingBoing) a somewhat Steampunk Ukranian painting modification of a Aeroprakt A22 plane, made to look as if it was crafted from wooden planks and packed full of cogs and gears! It’s certainly a much better paint effort than some others I might imagine, and the idea of that little thouroughly modern plane looking like something from a hundred years ago, amuses me greatly! Slap an extra layer of woodstain on, ensure the flying goggles are on tight and chocks away!

Oh, I must mention that Mr Beaty originally linked me to the Dark Roasted Blend blog, where it was also mentioned.

Les Reves Mechaniques – Intro

Les Reves Mechaniques was created as the introduction to a series never made – a final project for a film editing course that the creator was participating in. “The Mechanical Dreams” (Google’s best guess at a translation) looked to be a very Steampunk, if rather anthropomorphic, creation with bipedal dinosaurs, engineer centaurs and gentleman mallards. Indeed, it reminds me very much of “Around the World with Willy Fog” the cartoon series from my youth (and I must look it up for Steampunk potential). The music, I believe, is from Amelié (by the same director as City of Lost Children and Delicatessen) and has to be my favourite piece of accordion music.

Hollowed Lightbulbs

Steampunk Lightbulb

Isn’t it delightful? (No pun intended.) Over at TeamDroid, there’s a tutorial written by Mr John on how to hollow out and clean your own dead lightbulb and as an example of what crazy tasks you can put these recovered shells to, he made a “neo-Victorian New Age Flemming like valve” above. While I still hold out thin hope that he’ll write up that tutorial for making this trinket, I do admire the look of it greatly. I’m not sure where you’d put it (other than in some kind of collection with a few others in an old mahogany cabinet) but it would look perfectly placed in any Steampunk laboratory I’m sure.

Jeff de Boer – Not Just Rayguns

Flying Train

I’m sure you’ve seen the utterly gobsmacking rayguns by Jeff de Boer, but he’s also known for making armour for cats and mice (fair’s fair, after all), rocket lamps, armour-ties and certain large scale works like the flying steam train above! There’s a dastardly villian’s vehicle if ever there was one. While the main point of this post is to point out that Steampunk steam-train, I was facinated by the fact that the rayguns are part of Mr de Boer’s much much larger project – the aim being to write a book on the history of an entire society/world through the evolution of their firearms – but it is not our world, but a parrallel one. Apparently he’s writing the book when he can, but at some point there’s talk of having the grand collection of firearms tour various galleries – each weapon of which will be true to this alternative world, and created from scratch. I have no doubt some of these firearms would be Steampunk in their appearance, with Mr de Boer so in tune with these alternative ‘histories’. I very much look forward to even more from the master of rayguns.

Jackanapes – Anim

Just a quick one – this seems to be the first episode someone is having a go at making.  It’s somewhat Steampunk, but the addition of man portable rockets does somewhat detract from that.  Still, fun for a few seconds and if they make more it’d be interesting to see how it comes along.  *mumbles to self*  I’m sure I’ve seen that soldier somewhere before…
