Etherscope – Pen and Paper RPG

Posted by on December 19th,2006

Etherscope Hardback

Curiously, there seems to be quite a few Steampunk pen and paper RPGs – perhaps Steampunk fans have that curious combination of literary interest and world building mania that can lend itself so well to roleplaying settings. But anyway, the above is called Etherscope, and breaks with history back in 1876 with the discovery of Etherspace – a new and untapped resource for Victorian industry. The game itself sets itself in an alternative 1984 and is possibly the closest to Steam’Punk’ that I’ve heard of – in that it is the Steam equivalent to Cyberpunk. Scope Riders, System Agents and Etherspace demons – it’s like Cyberpunk reskinned. Definitely worth a look if it’s to your taste – a mix of steam, ether, occult and punk. (Some nice pictures there too – I like the one with the mechancial arm.)

Rail of War – Game

Rail of War

Mr Duppi informed me about a little free web game called Rail of War – a game where you drive your customisable train around a landscape filled with enemies in tanks, trucks and planes. But worry not – for you are armed with cannons and can upgrade to rockets at a later date. Reminding me much of those old school scrolling shoot-em-ups that were more popular a while ago, I found the game to be interesting enough, though possibly a little slow for my tastes. I do like the idea of upgrading your train with new weapons and different bodies (for pulling strength and high speed), though the setting seems a little skewed – train combat with rockets? Still, an amusing distraction for a little while, and it seems that it will allow player customisable levels too (though that may be in the ‘full’ version, I do not know).

Theif II - The Metal Age

No doubt many of you are familiar with the Thief series – our old friend Garrett the master thief sneaking around an alternative history of swords and arrows, castles and steam power, rooftops and electrical lighting. Like a strange Medieval-Steampunk crossover, the world of Thief is both strange and familiar – it works. Which is just as well, as in this game force of arm will not be the keys to your success, but understanding the world and keeping to its shadows, will.

What I was not aware of (and you may be in the same situation) is that a lively and apparently very skilled modding community still surrounds the Thief games. A reader by the name of Jeff was kind enough to point out the Through the Looking Glass page, which has discussions on all the Thief games (and other Looking Glass games – oh System Shock 2, how I miss thee) and reviews on the 400 or so community made maps. These add-on adventures expand the world of Thief, bringing horror and mystery, seasonal cheer and comedies, and other new facets to Garrets adventures. And with each one, this world of gears and guards becomes richer. So if you can set aside the now dated graphics, maybe you will visit again as I have had to do!

Bang Howdy! Mr N Barnes and Mr Q Walpole both independently sent word about a new game from the creators of Puzzle Pirates – Bang! Howdy! I had been in the beta some time ago, but abandoned it after being unable to get past the tutorial without it crashing – I submitted the bug (the duty of every tester, of course) but forgot to return to it. Foolish of me, really!

So now it’s free open beta – and the bugs have been well and truly squished (for the most part, I’m sure). The game is set in a rather cute Wild West, with you defending your territory from invading bandits and other players – it’s time to rustle cattle and stake gold claims in a turn based, persistant multiplayer strategy kind of way. As for Steampunk – they’ve got dirigible units and steam gunners (almost steam robotic artillery) to cover that base. Nice little game – and I did like Puzzle Pirates – quite innovative.

Steamcoach Cannon Paper Model

Vulture Gulch Steamcoach Cannon

MicroTactix, purveyor of cheap scenery and free RPG engines, has a scenic setting known as Vulture Gulch – a wild west setting with a Steampunk flavour. The evil professor Laddamoore (above) has apparently recently escaped from prison and is now using his nefarious inventions to help him rob banks and stagecoaches! You’ll find the really rather reasonable building pdf’s for Vulture Gulch here (steam train, fort and buildings), along with a link to a download for a free pdf to try – the Steamcoach Cannon!

It looks like a lovely little model, and would be tonnes of fun to print out and colour in for little Steampunk fans – and as it’s printable, what would be cooler than to have a whole battalion of these little steam proto-tanks striking fear into the hearts of interferin’ do gooders in the west. Because lets face it – the evil geniuses always have the coolest toys. (More free downloads from Microtactix – including a mad scientist lab).

Pyweek TrainGame

Mr M Ryan, if you’re still reading, I apologise for taking so long to post this – the PyWeek Programming Challenge, week 2 entries. PyWeek is a weekly Python game programming challenge set to encourage new projects and quickly formed games – and week 2 had the theme of “It Runs On Steam!”. Thus, quite a few of the entries had a very strong Steampunk flavour!

I’ve not played them all, but I quite enjoyed 20,000 Light Years Into Space, an RTS with a difference, harvesting steam from vents and trying to upgrade your planetary base despite sandstorms, earthquakes and increasingly devious aliens. Opiod looks good too – appears to be a Thrust variant with a steam powered rocket. Amazing what can be done in a week, and puts my own amature programming to shame.

Damnation Steampunk Western

I must thank Mr Andy_W for the pointing out Damnation: Hell Breaks Loose, (beware, painfully slow Flash page) and it had most certainly sneaked under my radar. A Western Steampunk, Unreal Tournament total conversion, Damnation: HBL looks quite impressive for what it is! With what seems to be a combination of steam weaponry and Native American themed spirit powers, and apparently a combination of both first person combat with third person adventuring, it sounds like it might be rather good indeed – it certainly has lofty goals. I thought the video was rather good, with a steam powered motorcycle racing the locomotive and creating an impressive entrance just in time to fight the forces of evil. Quite a proliferation of goggles, too. grins

Sparks - Mad Professor Sparks: Anna

So, I had been looking for a link that I’ve misplaced (well, it’s at work, actually) and accidently found another post worthy site! Sparks (as far as I can tell, not related to Girl Genius sparks) is a collection of purchasable and downloadable truetype ‘fonts’ that feature characters and creatures that you can then print out for your gaming needs. They have several themes, but the two of most interest to us will most likely be the “Watch the skies!” set of pulp science fiction (complete with beautiful alien emporesses) and the one shown above, “Sunburned and Rusty” a Steampunk Western set with gun slingers, steam robots and scientists. (There is also the free taster pack with characters from the two above sets and more.) Quite interesting, and were I running a Weird West Steampunk game, I’d probably get some of these for convienience.

Amazon.co.uk Media Links

Some media links Some more media links And a couple more media links One last media link image Just a quick note to say I’m compiling a list of Amazon.co.uk affiliated links for some of the Steampunk media that I’m encountering. The page is listed in the page list at the side, and each brief entry comes with a short description, and the image links to Amazon. I do want to state that these are affiliated links, so if you buy any of these items via my links, then I’ll be able to ‘save up’ for an Amazon voucher, at no charge to you. Please do not feel you have to buy from these links – I encourage you to shop around and in particular to support your local brick and mortar bookshops. Still, any and all click throughs will be appreciated, if anonymously.

Arcanum

chuckles Ok, ok – I give in! I’m at this very moment downloading the demo of the most recommended Steampunk game as sent in by very kind contributors – Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magicka Obscura. People such as Mr M Ryan, Mr J Meeker, and several more have recommended this game quite highly – being mindful of its flaws, but enjoying it for very indepth character creation and the technological successor to Fallout (by the same company, Troika).

In a world of elves, trolls, orcs and dwarves, where magick and technology do not make easy bedfellows, and racial strife abounds between previously cleekish fantasy species, you create your avatar of extraordinary depth – choose magick or technology to be your tools (or neither) and enter a world unlike any that I’ve played before.

For more information, maybe you’d like to visit the comprehensive Wikipedia page. I look forward to trying it out, despite my previous aversion to ‘fantasy’ Steampunk. smiles
